A Confederacy of Dunces won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and is a comedic novel about the misanthropic, obese scholar Ignatius J. Reilly, who is forced to find work in 1960s New Orleans. The novel was published posthumously in 1980 by LSU Press, after John Kennedy Toole's mother, Thelma Toole, and writer Walker Percy championed the manuscript following Toole's suicide in 1969.
