Ape House is a novel by Sara Gruen about six bonobos who can use American Sign Language to communicate and a scientist, Isabel Duncan, who feels more comfortable with them than with humans. When the lab is bombed, the apes escape and are exploited, first by a reality TV show, and the book follows Isabel and a reporter, John Thigpen, as they try to find and rescue them. The story explores themes of interspecies communication, animal rights, and the effects of pop culture.
