Gone-Away Lake won a 1958 Newbery Honor Award and the 1957 New York Herald Tribune's Children's Spring Book Festival Award, and was a 1963 US nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. The story follows cousins Portia, Foster, and Julian as they spend a summer exploring the woods and discover a forgotten summer resort built around a swamp where a lake once was. They also find two elderly residents who have never left and share tales of the lake's past.
