Ink in the Blood by Kim Smejkal is a young adult fantasy novel about two "inklings," Celia and Anya, who use magical tattoos to enforce the will of the religion of Profeta. After years of secretly knowing the religion is a lie that strips followers of their freedom, they escape by joining a traveling theater troupe. Their escape is short-lived, as they soon learn that the Divine they don't believe in is real and angry, forcing them to confront the truth of their world and use their abilities for rebellion.
