Johannes Cabal the Necromancer won the Coventry Inspiration Award in 2014. The novel is a dark-humored fantasy about a brilliant but amoral necromancer, Johannes Cabal, who sells his soul to Satan for the knowledge of necromancy. After realizing he needs his soul to perform his research properly and to simply be himself, he makes a wager with the devil: he must collect 100 other souls within a year or be damned forever. Satan provides him with a traveling carnival to help him accomplish this task, setting the stage for a darkly funny adventure blending horror, fantasy, and pulp elements.
