The story follows Zach Bridger, a former Super Bowl MVP quarterback whose life is complicated when his ex-wife, Rebecca Pratt, is violently assaulted and placed on life support. Despite their bitter divorce, Zach still holds her medical power of attorney, forcing him to make the impossible decision of whether to keep her alive or remove her life support. Overwhelmed by public scrutiny and the pressure from Rebecca's wealthy family, Zach initially defers the decision to her parents. Four years later, the man responsible for the assault, Eban Clarke, the scion of another influential family, is released from prison early due to favoritism. Determined to see true justice served, state prosecutor Kate Lennon approaches Zach with a plan: if Rebecca dies, Eban can be retried on a murder charge. This places Zach in a moral quandary where he must actively choose to end his ex-wife's life to ensure her attacker faces a more severe penalty. As Zach and Kate navigate this controversial legal situation, an attraction develops between them. Simultaneously, Eban, realizing the jeopardy he is in, plots to ensure that neither Zach nor Kate can bring him to justice.
