In The Austere Academy, the Baudelaire orphans are sent to Prufrock Preparatory School, a dismal boarding school where they must endure punishments from the cruel Vice Principal Nero, a bullying student named Carmelita Spats, and crab-infested living quarters. They befriend the Quagmire triplets, Duncan and Isadora, but their hope is dashed when Count Olaf appears disguised as the gym coach, Coach Genghis. Olaf ultimately kidnaps the Quagmires, leaving the Baudelaires with a cryptic clue about the V.F.D. organization.
