The Lords of the North is the third book in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories series, following Uhtred of Bebbanburg as he seeks revenge against the Danes who killed his father figure, Ragnar. After a victory for King Alfred, Uhtred travels north with his lover, Hild, where he becomes involved with the newly freed slave Guthred, who claims the throne of Northumbria. Uhtred helps Guthred fight his enemies, including the cruel Kjartan and Sven the One-Eyed, but he is eventually betrayed by Guthred, which leads to him being enslaved. After escaping, Uhtred reunites with his foster brother Ragnar and continues his quest for revenge against the Danish lords who hold his family's ancestral lands.
