The Namesake is a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri about an Indian immigrant family in America, spanning three decades. It follows the first and second generations—Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli, and their children Gogol and Sonia—as they navigate the immigrant experience, the conflict between Indian traditions and American culture, and the struggle to find one's own identity. The story is centered on the firstborn son, Gogol, who is named after the Russian author Nikolai Gogol after his father survives a train crash and is inspired by one of his books. Gogol initially rebels against his name and heritage but ultimately comes to understand its significance, forging a connection with his family and the memory of his father.
