Bernhard Schlink's novel The Reader won the Hans Fallada Prize (1998) and was the first German book to top The New York Times bestseller list. It also received several other international awards, including the Prix Laure Bataillon (1997) and the Grinzane Cavour Prize (1997), and was named an Oprah's Book Club selection. The novel, which explores post-war German guilt, memory, and the complex relationship between a young man and an older woman, was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film.
