The Sanctuary by Raymond Khoury is a historical and scientific thriller that follows two parallel storylines: in 1705 Portugal, an inquisitor on the run is tasked with a quest involving an ancient book, and in 2003 Baghdad, an army unit discovers a secret lab where experiments have been performed. The two plots converge as the search for a mysterious scientist connects to a conspiracy involving the pursuit of immortality through the ancient symbol of an "Ouroboros" or "tail-eating snake," and a modern-day geneticist becomes the key to unlocking the secret, which has caused destruction for centuries.
