In The Wide Window, the Baudelaire orphans are sent to live with their extremely fearful Aunt Josephine by Lake Lachrymose. When a hurricane approaches, Count Olaf, disguised as a sailor named "Captain Sham," arrives and forces Josephine to write a suicide note. The children rescue Josephine from a cave, but Olaf later reveals his disguise, escapes, and the orphans are left to face yet another guardian.
