Wonderful!!

Unpredictable and totally enthralling. I love read a book that I can’t predict what will happen. The characters grow and you become entangled in their world. Thank you.

I dont think I will ever forget this story

This book will stick with me a very long time, this isn't my usual genre and it will not be for everyone. Some of the vocabulary could be seen as ostentatious but I felt it really fit with the characters and the story. I beleive you could love this regardless of whether you like video games but being someone who grew up in this era it felt nostalgic and hauntingly raw. I loved the video game design process but the character make this story.I both hated and loved these characters, you saw all the sides of them that most people don't want to see. It's a beautiful coming of age story about a friendship and all the pains and traumas life can throw at you. I wanted more but still ended in a very fitting way.

Couldn't put it down

I loved everything about this book, couldn't put it down and read it basically nonstop. The story was compelling, the characters felt real and relatable, and most of all their conflicts and tribulations felt real.

Really exquisite read

I love how the story is about life through the lens of 3 friends. Their ups and downs, success, stress, lost, and their love, jealousy and even dislike of one another at times. A few chapters are a unique wild read, but I adored them because they made me curious and yet it tied everything together. While serious life events happen in the book, it’s not a heavy read and there was always something calling me back to find out what happened next. Just a pleasant read with a solid comforting ending.

Fantastic Read

Loved this book. Well researched and presented. I learned a ton about the gaming industry not to mention expanded my vocabulary exponentially! I was so happy my Kindle has the dictionary function as there were a lot of new words for me and I consider myself to have a pretty in-depth vocabulary! It was an exhilarating read!

Worth reading

This book thinks it’s better than it is, but the second half is worth reading.

A compelling read.

Dropped me into a page-turning learning curve that gave me insight into my kid’s attraction to game worlds. There’s flesh on these characters, real issues and insights into the youthful ambition and conflicted hopes of a generation. It’s an enjoyable, plot-driven, well-written page-turner.

Unexpected Delight

I didn’t really know what to expect and I really enjoyed this book. The videogames are a backdrop and metaphor for the human relationships, trauma processing, creative collaboration, and reflections on life and death woven throughout the story. Engaging features like a love triangle and violence, interesting plays with narrative structure, and thoughtful intertextual references make for a rich story for analysis. Also just a good read!

Realistic narrative about two collaborators that are wellmatched. A finely crafted story. I’d recommend this book to anyone who wants a good summer read.

A great book that is not “pushing an agenda”

This is a great book about two friends who bond over games, and it follows them throughout the years. This book regularly references current events, mostly as a way to keep up with the year as it spans decades. It’s worth noting that there is one chapter that references “LGBTQ themes” that’s it, a single chapter. ONE CHAPTER. Some reviewers seem to think this single chapter is an issue and it is “pushing” something, I do not. Gay people exist in the world so why is a gay couple an issue? Out of the many straight couples in this book, it seems realistic to me that at some point our characters would befriend someone who is not straight. Not only this, but the chapter that is about a gay couples pushes the story forward on a crucial way. If you are upset by the existence of LGBTQ+ folks then I don’t know what to say. They exist everywhere, and they very briefly exist in this book.

Receiver loved it!!

I bought this as a gift for a family member, based on a summary of the plot and the fact that the book was based on a lasting friendship. The receiver said this (unknown to me) had been on her "must buy, must read" list. She said that she could not put it down, claiming that it was one of the best books she had read in a long time and that it was a favourite. She is an avid reader so this is high praise indeed!
