All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy is the first book in the Border Trilogy, following 16-year-old John Grady Cole as he and his friend journey to Mexico after his family ranch is sold. On their journey, they encounter a third boy, Jimmy Blevins, and find a country both beautiful and cruel. The novel is a coming-of-age story that explores themes of love, loss, and the end of an era, where dreams are "paid for in blood".
