Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a semi-autobiographical novel by Dai Sijie set during China's Cultural Revolution, about two teenage boys sent for "re-education" in a remote village. The story follows their experiences as they find a hidden collection of banned Western novels, which they secretly read and retell to the local tailor's daughter, "the Little Seamstress". Their literary awakening contrasts with their harsh reality, exploring themes of literature, romance, and personal transformation amidst political repression.
