Andrew Taylor's 2008 historical thriller Bleeding Heart Square received the 2009 Martin Beck Award from the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy for Best Translated Crime Novel. It was also shortlisted for the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Dagger in 2008 and the Barry Award in the US in 2009. Set in London in 1934, the novel weaves a gothic mystery around the fate of a missing woman, a dark secret, and an aristocratic woman seeking refuge from her abusive husband. The book is partly based on a real-life Victorian murder case.
