Catch-22 is a satirical novel by Joseph Heller, published in 1961, about the absurdities of war and bureaucracy, focusing on a U.S. Army bombardier named Yossarian trying to get out of combat duty. He is thwarted by the titular, paradoxical rule: if a man is declared insane, he can be grounded, but if he asks to be grounded, he proves he is sane and must continue flying. The book is widely considered a masterpiece of American literature and has appeared on many "best novels" lists, though it did not win major awards upon its initial release.
