Moby Dick is a novel by Herman Melville narrated by a sailor named Ishmael, who signs onto the whaling ship Pequod. The ship is commanded by Captain Ahab, who is obsessed with taking revenge on Moby Dick, the giant white whale that previously severed his leg. The story follows Ahab's monomaniacal pursuit, which ultimately leads to the tragic destruction of the Pequod and the death of almost the entire crew; Ishmael survives by clinging to a coffin.
