A young adult documentary novel set in Mississippi during Freedom Summer 1964. It follows 12-year-old Sunny Fairchild as she navigates her changing family life and the escalating civil rights tensions in her town, which are brought to a head by the arrival of outside volunteers and clashes with segregationist locals. The story is also told from the perspective of Raymond, a Black boy who becomes directly impacted by the violence and injustice of the time.
