Ponky's owner decides to sell the course to the snobby, adjacent Mayflower Club, which plans to turn it into a parking lot. Stick's estranged and wealthy father dies, leaving him an inheritance with a single condition: he must fulfill his youthful promise to qualify for a major tournament, the British Open. His friend "Two Down" loses a significant sum to a hustler connected to the Russian mob. Faced with losing their beloved course and mounting personal disasters, the group of misfits hatches a plan centered on Stick's improbable quest to qualify for the British Open, blending humor, social satire, and a love for the game of golf.
