The Boy on the Bridge by M.R. Carey is a post-apocalyptic novel about a crew sent from a fortified city to a "hungry" infested world to find a cure for the plague, but instead they encounter a new generation of creatures. The story follows the brilliant but socially isolated 15-year-old, Stephen Greaves, who joins the mission with his foster mother, epidemiologist Samrina Khan. The novel explores themes of humanity and survival in a world changed by a fungal infection, and serves as a prequel to The Girl with all the Gifts, explaining events from that story.
