In The Ersatz Elevator, the Baudelaire orphans are placed with wealthy and trend-obsessed guardians, the Squalors, who live in a penthouse where elevators are "out". The children discover Count Olaf is disguised as an auctioneer named Gunther and that he has kidnapped their friends, the Quagmire triplets. They rescue the Quagmires from a secret elevator shaft, but Olaf and the villainous Esmé Squalor escape with them, leaving the Baudelaires to continue their search for a way to stop Olaf and save their friends.
