The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who is persuaded by the wizard Gandalf to join a group of thirteen dwarves on a quest to reclaim their ancestral home and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Along the way, Bilbo and the dwarves encounter trolls, goblins, and elves, with Bilbo getting separated and finding a magical, invisibility-granting ring in a cave after a riddle game with Gollum. They eventually reach the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo finds Smaug's weakness and the dragon is defeated, but not before it attacks Lake-town. A battle called the Battle of Five Armies ensues between humans, elves, and dwarves against an army of goblins and wargs, ending in a goblin victory but with many deaths, including Thorin. Bilbo returns home, a changed and more courageous hobbit.
