The Kitchen House is a historical novel by Kathleen Grissom about an Irish orphan named Lavinia who becomes an indentured servant on a late 18th-century Virginia plantation. Living among the slaves in the kitchen house, she forms a close bond with Belle, the master's illegitimate slave daughter, and is cared for by the slaves as her family. The story follows Lavinia as she navigates the complex and dangerous social structure of the plantation, straddling the divide between the "big house" and the kitchen house, and is also told from Belle's perspective.
