The book is a historical fiction story about a shy, 12-year-old girl named Marlee in 1958 Little Rock, Arkansas, who befriends a new student, Liz. Their friendship blossoms amidst the backdrop of the city's high school closings due to integration, and Marlee must find her voice when Liz is forced to leave school.
