In The Miserable Mill, the Baudelaire orphans are sent to the Lucky Smells Lumbermill in the town of Paltryville to work for a cruel new guardian named Sir. The children soon suspect that Count Olaf is nearby, disguised as a female receptionist named Shirley, and working with the local optometrist, Dr. Orwell. Klaus is hypnotized by the doctor, which leads to a dangerous accident at the mill, and the children must use their wits to escape Olaf's scheme and the mill's oppressive conditions.
