The Shadow of the Wind won several awards, including the Barry Award for Best First Novel, Book Sense Book of the Year, and the Borders Original Voices Award. The summary of the novel is about a young boy in 1945 Barcelona who is taken by his bookseller father to a secret library called the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and is allowed to choose one book to protect. He chooses The Shadow of the Wind by Julián Carax and becomes obsessed with finding out more about the author, only to discover that someone is systematically destroying all of Carax's books. This leads Daniel on a journey into Barcelona's dark past, unearthing a tragic story of love, murder, and madness.
