Walk Two Moons won the 1995 Newbery Medal and other awards for its story about 13-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, who travels with her grandparents to Idaho and recounts the story of her friend Phoebe Winterbottom. While on their road trip, Sal tells a story about her friend's missing mother and mysterious messages as a way to cope with her own loss and grief over her own mother's disappearance and death. The novel explores themes of loss, identity, familial bonds, and self-discovery, and teaches that every story has two sides.
